With all the new taxi and app-based driving services nowadays, getting where you want to go is easier than ever. The advent of services such as Uber and Lyft allow people to easily schedule a ride to and from almost anywhere. These companies allow drivers to use their own cars to earn money and help passengers save money on travel. At the end of August however, Uber partnered with Nissan in order to provide a more environmentally friendly ride through the use of the Nissan Leaf.

Electric cars are a great way to reduce emissions and save on gas, so they are potentially the perfect fit for a worldwide driving service such as Uber. This new program will allow the best-rated Uber drivers to lease the Nissan Leaf at the lowest rental rates instead of being forced to use their own car. The first test of this program will be conducted in the UK, where emission rates are being cracked down on due to the pollution problems in the city. Over a three-month period, The Energy Savings Trust will monitor 20 Nissan Leafs for driving patterns, user experience and the overall economics of using an electric car. As UK Uber Manager Jo Bertram added, “People already associate Uber with hybrid cars, but we want to go a big step further with fully electric cars.”

It’s no secret why the Nissan Leaf is the ideal electric car for this project; the car was a pioneer in affordable and efficient electric car manufacturing.
