Nissan Shares Its Vision Of The Future Of Cars

nissan logo 1

The 2017 North American International Auto Show, or NAIAS for short, brought together numerous car manufacturers and designers for some engaging discussions in the future of transportation. CEOs and lead engineers presented in front of large crowds at the event, including Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn. Ghosn is one of the most vocal leaders of the car industry, and in his talk he listed numerous areas that must be addressed in the coming future. Notably, he focused on four topics: electric cars, autonomy, self-driving cars and applications.

Electric Cars: These small but efficient vehicles have been around for a long time, and making sure they are more affordable and have a longer range in the future is critical. A battery powered car has no emissions and can be charged in as little as 30 minutes. The 2017 Nissan Leaf is a great example.

Autonomy and Self Driving Cars: These two are generally grouped together, as #autonomous cars only require minimal human input. Many automakers have pledged to make these commercial available by 2020, including Nissan, and Ghosn urged others to stick to that promise. They will definitely be the face of driving in the future.

Applications: As smartphones become better integrated with cars, we can begin to use them more efficiently than ever. Voice activated commands and the ability to add events to your calendar are just a few of features companies are researching. The possibilities are endless if every car can be connected to each other. It will also make self-driving cars safer if they can communicate with other vehicles.

Nissan Seeks Goal Of Developing Connected Cars

Nissasn leaf

As creating self-driving cars has become the goal that most automakers have set themselves, it’s important to consider all the potential benefits that a computer operated car can provide. These machines not only let you relax a bit more on your tedious drive to work each morning, they provide important information that can save you time and money. This is a concept termed “connected cars,” and it allows for better navigation, predictability and safety.

Much like the transition that phones made from a simple calling device to a computer in your pocket, vehicles are slowly becoming autonomous and also will be able to connect to the internet. This change means that cars will be able to communicate with one another and relay information back to a central system. It can then use this data to improve the efficiency of apps such as navigation. Each car will know if there is an accident on the highway or if some new road work is slowing down traffic in a certain area, thanks to other cars that have already encountered the incident. This allows for immediate, real-time updating of your navigation app.

There are many other exciting applications of this connectivity. Want to know if there is a free charging station or a spot open in a parking garage? Thanks to environmental sensors, an already parked self-driving car could tell if there is room open next to it, allowing entire parking lots to be mapped out in less than a second. These dynamic apps will change the way people drive, and adapt to the constantly changing world by simply being connected to other vehicles.

Nissan expects to have these cars on the road by 2020, but for now you can check out the award winning #Altima or a used Nissan Leaf at Coast Nissan. We have a wide selection of all the new 2017 models and provide many Nissan services, so check out our whole inventory online at www.coastnissan.com.

Electric And Self-Driving Cars Become New Focus Of Nissan

Nissasn leaf

At this point, electric and self-driving cars are on the fast track to becoming the biggest developments the car industry have ever seen. Electric cars are environmentally friendly and they require no gasoline, which reduces costs for consumers and emits no greenhouse gases. Self-driving cars provide drivers a way to escape the boredom of traffic or having to go thirty miles down the highway. Recently, Nissan released the changes they are making in order to stay at the forefront of these market.

For electric cars, Nissan has always been an industry pioneer since the introduction of the Leaf, which was one of the first commercially viable electric cars. As battery technology has been improved over the last couple of years and storage capacities are becoming more viable for everyday drivers, more people are making the switch. The latest Nissan Leaf will offer a 100+ mile range with even more horsepower. Nissan has also been hard at work installing charging stations in thousands of cities across America in order to provide “fuel” for travelers who need a quick recharge.

Nissan has been heavily investing into researching self-driving cars. They have already sold a line of optional autonomous minivans in Japan, and over 60 percent of people took that option. Clearly the public is craving self-driving cars, so Nissan is going to bring it to them. Nissan estimates that their first commercially viable self-driving car will be available by 2020, so keep your eyes on the near future.

Nissan Sets Goal To Release Self-Driving Cars By 2020

shutterstock_364249241

When it comes to designing advanced features, car manufacturers can only get so far on their own. Most companies consist of automotive engineers who simply don’t have enough technological expertise to make new systems such as a self-driving car, at least on their own. That’s why partnerships with other companies are so important for promoting growth within the industry, as they allow for more complex ideas to be implemented. Nissan recently partnered with several companies to produce autonomous vehicles by 2020.

Beginning with a Microsoft partnership in late September, Nissan has continued to push the limits of car design with their own 300-person tech division, named Alliance Connected Vehicle and Mobility Services. This group will be focusing on three major areas: software development, cloud engineering and data analytics. These three have been identified as the biggest areas that need to be developed in order to produce self-driving cars, which Nissan plans to launch twelve of by 2020.

Software development is likely the most important area, as a car’s onboard computer needs to be able to properly incorporate all its features. Additionally, software is the “driver” of a self-driving car, scanning the road and making adjustments. Cloud engineering and data analytics go hand in hand, as mountains of data collected from different systems must be processed and examined in order for autonomous cars to “learn” how to drive.  To help with both of these, Nissan will be working with the firm Sylpheo as well as the Microsoft Azure cloud platform.

Nissan is continually improving its features through these partnerships, and it shows in cars like the Leaf and Altima. Come test drive our advanced cars at Coast Nissan, and you can also find our inventory online at www.coastnissan.com.
